Q: Tell me where you are registered, dammit!

A: Sorry, I'm never sure how many times I'm supposed to dodge this question before Emily Post says I'm allowed to answer it.

Since our tastes are all over the place and we think all the enforced brand loyalty of a traditional registry is silly, we're setting up several registries for various kinds of things, as well as listing some charities we'd love it if you'd donate to.

Beth and Steve wish to respect the sanctity of sentient life(*), and therefore request that you not purchase animal-derived or animal-tested items for them.
(*) This sentiment sometimes called "veganism".
In short, please note the following:
  • Meat (even fish! srsly!), eggs, milk, butter, cheese, honey, and beeswax are all animal products.
  • Wool, leather, silk, and fur are all animal products.
  • Some wines, champagnes, and beers are clarified with egg whites or contain isinglass --- which are animal products.
  • Many bath or household products are tested on animals or contain glycerin or other animal products.

  • Crate&Barrel - pretty self-explanatory
  • Chef's Resource - True story: Beth once spent a year helping making sure 60 fellow hippie college students got fed regularly. Mmmm, heavy-duty cookware.

Other ideas:

  • We support fair trade.
  • We support handcrafters, such as those featured on Etsy.
  • We're also into vintage stuff, secondhand stores, and cool stuff lurking neglected in attics and basements.
  • doctors without borders - apolitical NGO working around the world to make good medical care a universal right rather than a privilege of the wealthy
  • GLAD - Fighting legal battles to defend the civil rights of gays and lesbians.
  • Kiva - microlending site that lets you see profiles of entrepreneurs from developing countries and help finance their businesses.
  • Peaceful Prairie - sanctuary for rescued/abandond farm animals.
  • The Farm Sanctuary - another farm sanctuary, probably the one of the most influential. Even eBay has heard of them.
  • Terrapass - carbon emissions offsets.

A note about charities: We haven't set up any charity registries per se, just this list. We can't see if or how much you donate, and we like it this way. You're certainly welcome to tell us if you want to, but we're not keeping tabs. In the Jewish tradition Beth comes from, giving to charity comes in different levels of altruism, with the lowest being grudging giving and the highest being anonymous giving. So if you don't feel like telling us that's fine --- and extra virtuous!

Note regarding crass materialism:

If you feel like buying us something or donating to honor us, that's very nice. We still feel weird putting up a registry page because it's basically like, "we love each other now buy us stuff". We think that's icky. This page is really just to let you know what we like, a totally optional guide to the stuff we're interested in, just in case this was information you wanted. We get that some people will want to share in the celebration with gifts, while others will want to give us good wishes in other ways. We're cool with whatever's meaningful. We're totally psyched to have so many people supporting our relationship and really that's all we could ask for.
