A: March 2006 --- Beth was studying abroad in Germany for the year but was home for the break between semesters. Her friend Berae (the one in the picture) was also friends with Steve and invited both of them to go with her to an IDSA conference in Detroit. The three of us spent the weekend together enjoying lectures about Industrial Design, as well as roaming around abandoned buildings with a video camera, driving through huge puddles, eating Wonderbread at a Polish diner, perusing an art museum, and watching a screening of Darwin's Nightmare.
Before Beth had to go back to finish her year in Germany, she and Steve got a chance to bond over Jim Jarmusch films, bad American-Chinese food, and minimalist children's books from the 1980s. While in Germany over the next few months, Beth and Steve e-mailed constantly and ran up a big Skype bill and many inside jokes.
In late July, Steve flew to Germany to help Beth move back to the USA, and after a brief and poorly-planned tour of northern Europe, we flew home together.
